Handel's Israel in Egypt

Sunday 22 November 2009
St James's Church, Louth
7.30pm          MAP

Handel’s most dramatic choral masterpiece - a perfect showcase for this 100 strong choir.  First performed in 1739, three years before ‘Messiah’, ‘Israel in Egypt’ was composed when Handel was at the height of his artistic powers. It came to be held as one of the most popular of the composer's works and most luxuriantly choral of all the dramatic oratorios.

The choir was accompanied by the Eastern Sinfonia orchestra and the concert featured no fewer than six soloists:

  • Ruth Jenkins (Soprano)
  • Christina Sampson (Soprano)
  • Stephen Burrows (Counter-Tenor)
  • Jonathan Stork (Tenor)
  • James Birchall (Bass)
  • Christopher Foster (Bass)
